Common email marketing problems
Sound familiar?
Most small businesses run into some combination of these.
A list that's rarely emailed
Contacts have been collected for months or years, but they hear from the business only occasionally, if at all.
No clear strategy
Emails go out when someone remembers to send one, rather than as part of a plan tied to actual goals.
Low open and click rates
Subject lines and content aren't earning attention, so most of the list never engages with what's sent.
Inconsistent branding
Every email looks and sounds a little different, so it doesn't build the same recognition as the rest of the business.
Poor segmentation
The same email goes to the whole list regardless of what people have actually bought, clicked or asked about.
Weak calls to action
Readers finish the email without a clear idea of what to do next, so interest doesn't turn into a click or a reply.
Difficulty measuring results
Opens and clicks get reported, but nobody can say what any of it actually contributed to enquiries or sales.
Sending without proper consent
Promotional emails go to contacts who never clearly agreed to receive marketing, which risks trust and compliance.
Our email marketing services
A strategy first, then the emails
Email is a channel you fully own — no algorithm changes, no rising ad costs, and a direct line to people who've already shown interest in your business. As a London-based email marketing agency working with small businesses in the UK, US, Canada and Australia, we start with a strategy tied to your goals, then plan and create the emails behind it.
The work falls into two kinds. One-off campaigns, such as newsletters, offers and announcements, are sent when you have something worth saying. Automated sequences, such as welcome, follow-up and re-engagement emails, are set up once in your email platform and then send when someone takes an action, like joining your list or going quiet. Exactly which you need depends on where your business is starting from.
Email strategy & campaign planning
A plan tied to your goals, your audience and where email fits in the customer journey — not just "send more emails."
Newsletter creation
Regular newsletters planned, written and designed around what your audience actually wants to read, and they can share articles created through our content marketing service.
Welcome-email sequences
An automated series, set up in your email platform, that introduces new subscribers to your business properly.
Lead-nurture campaigns
Automated follow-ups, set up in your email platform, that stay in front of people who aren't ready to buy yet.
Customer re-engagement
Win-back campaigns aimed at subscribers and past customers who've gone quiet.
Audience segmentation
The right message to the right group, based on what people have shown interest in, where your data and email platform support it — not one blast to everyone.
Email copywriting
Subject lines and copy written to be opened and read, in your tone of voice, not deleted.
Template design
A branded, responsive email template that looks like you, checked on common devices and email apps before anything sends.
Campaign setup & scheduling
Campaigns built, checked and scheduled in your existing email platform, sent at the right time for your audience.
Deliverability & list hygiene
Regular checks on bounces, delivery problems and spam complaints, plus a cleaner, permission-based list, so your emails have a better chance of reaching the people who asked for them.
A/B testing
Where your platform and list size allow, subject lines, content and send times are tested against each other, so decisions are based on what actually performs.
Reporting & improvement recommendations
Delivery, clicks and conversions tracked and explained in plain language, with clear next steps to improve them, alongside our wider analytics and reporting. Read how we track enquiries in GA4.
Healthier lists, better delivery
Email deliverability and list hygiene
Good emails only work if they arrive. We help keep your list healthy and your sending habits sensible, using the data your email platform provides.
- Bounce rates — reviewing hard and soft bounces and acting on addresses that keep failing.
- Delivery problems — spotting sudden drops in delivery or engagement and looking into the likely causes.
- Spam complaints — reviewing complaint levels and adjusting content, frequency or targeting where they rise.
- Duplicate and invalid contacts — identifying contacts that are duplicated, mistyped or clearly invalid.
- Unsubscribes and suppressions — making sure people who unsubscribe or object stay suppressed and aren't emailed again.
- Inactive subscribers — reviewing long-inactive contacts and deciding whether to re-engage or remove them.
- Sending practices — consistent sending, permission-based sign-ups and sensible frequency, which mailbox providers tend to reward.
No one can guarantee inbox placement — mailbox providers decide that. Email authentication (SPF, DKIM and DMARC) also affects delivery. It is technical setup on your domain and email platform that we don't provide as a standard service, so if it looks like it's missing we'll recommend getting specialist help from your web host, IT support or email platform provider.
Our email marketing process
How we build your email marketing channel
Understand
We start with your audience and objectives — who you're emailing, and what you actually want email to achieve for the business.
Review
We review your existing list, past sends and current platform setup to see what's working and what's holding performance back.
Plan
We plan the campaign calendar and customer journey — what gets sent, to whom, and in what order.
Create, test & send
Copy and templates are written and built, checked and, where your platform and list size allow, A/B tested, then sent or scheduled to the right audience.
Measure & improve
Delivery, clicks and conversions are reviewed regularly, with the plan adjusted based on what's actually working.
What to expect
The audience you already own, used properly
We won't promise guaranteed sales or specific open rates — nobody honestly can. What a properly run email channel realistically gives you is this.
More consistent communication
Leads and customers hear from you on a regular, planned schedule instead of only when someone remembers to send something.
Better lead nurturing
Automated follow-ups keep your business in front of people who aren't ready to buy yet, so fewer leads simply go cold.
More repeat engagement
Re-engagement campaigns give past customers and quiet subscribers a reason to come back and interact again.
More relevant messages
Segmentation means people receive content based on what they've shown interest in, where your data and email platform support it.
Clearer campaign measurement
Opens and clicks are a starting point — we report on enquiries, bookings or sales tied back to specific emails where possible.
Less manual work
Welcome and follow-up sequences are set up once in your email platform, then send automatically as new subscribers join.

Common questions
Email marketing questions, answered.
Can you help if I don't have an email list yet?
Yes. We'll set up ethical, consent-based ways to start growing a list — such as a sign-up form or a lead magnet — alongside the wider strategy, rather than suggesting you buy or scrape one.
Which email platform should my business use?
It depends on your budget, list size and what you need it to do. We're not tied to one platform — if you already use one, we'll work within it; if not, we'll recommend an option that fits your needs during the strategy stage.
How much does email marketing cost?
It depends on the scope of work: how many campaigns you want each month, which automated sequences are needed and how complex they are, the size of your list and how much segmentation it needs. After discussing your goals and reviewing your current email marketing setup, we recommend a clear scope of work and provide a quotation for your approval before paid work begins.
Do I need to pay for an email marketing platform?
Email marketing platform subscriptions are paid separately by the client, and some platforms offer free plans for smaller lists. We explain any platform requirements and expected subscription costs before you approve the proposed work.
Can you create an automated welcome sequence?
Yes. We plan and write welcome sequences and set them up in your email platform, where it supports automation, so they send automatically as people join your list.
How often should my business send emails?
Consistently enough that subscribers recognise your name, and no more often than you can maintain useful content for. A realistic, sustainable schedule beats a burst of emails that tails off after a month.
Can you improve an existing campaign that isn't performing well?
Yes. We start by reviewing your current list, past sends and setup to identify what's holding performance back, then plan improvements to segmentation, content, design or timing from there.
How do you handle consent and unsubscribes?
Every campaign is built on properly consented contacts, with a working unsubscribe link on every send. We don't add contact-form enquiries to a marketing list automatically — that only happens if someone opts in separately.
How do UK GDPR and PECR affect email marketing?
UK GDPR covers how contact data is collected and used, and the right lawful basis depends on the situation. PECR adds specific rules for marketing emails: sending to individuals generally needs their consent, with a limited "soft opt-in" exception for existing customers who bought, or asked about, similar products or services and were given a simple way to refuse at the time and in every email. Different rules can apply to some business email addresses. In practice we work with properly permissioned lists, include a clear way to unsubscribe in every email, respect objections and keep suppression lists up to date, and never use bought or improperly collected lists. If you email people in other countries, other rules can apply too, such as CAN-SPAM in the US, CASL in Canada and the Spam Act in Australia. This isn't legal advice; for specific questions, see the ICO's guidance on electronic mail marketing.
Do you only work with London businesses?
No. Digital Growth Journey is based in London and works with small businesses in the UK, US, Canada and Australia. We plan email marketing around each business, its customers and the way it already works.
How will campaign performance be measured?
We report on delivery, including bounces and spam complaints, on clicks and campaign engagement and, where tracking is configured, on the website visits and enquiries your emails lead to in GA4. Open rates are an imperfect indicator, because some email apps load messages automatically for privacy reasons, so we don't rely on them alone. Results are tested and improved gradually over time.
